A Stormtrooper is an ideal disguise for a celebrity cameo: the helmet and uniform make the actor almost impossible to recognize, while the character can appear briefly without pulling attention away from the story. In The Force Awakens, Daniel Craig’s role is especially easy to miss because the trooper is one of the First Order guards holding Rey captive.
Rey tries a Jedi mind trick on him, urging him to release her and leave the door open. The moment matters to the plot as well as the joke: it is an early sign that Rey can influence someone through the Force, even though she is still discovering what she can do. Craig’s masked appearance serves that scene without turning it into a celebrity spotlight.

Craig was filming Spectre on the same studio lot as The Force Awakens. That put him close to the Star Wars production, where he asked a director for a background role. A Stormtrooper part required no elaborate introduction: the costume could blend him into the ranks, and the story already called for a guard in the scene.
The result is a cameo built into the action rather than set apart from it. Viewers can watch Rey’s escape unfold without knowing who is under the helmet; the hidden identity becomes an extra reward for anyone who learns about it later.
