Elfric Wells Chalmers Kearney was an eccentric visionary who firmly believed the London commute needed more theme park energy. In the early 1900s, he pitched an underground monorail that operated entirely on gravity. The stations would be built near the surface, with tracks plunging into deep tunnels so the trains would plummet like rollercoasters to gain speed, then rely on momentum to coast up to the next station. Despite the undeniable thrill of commuting via controlled freefall, the British government rudely refused to fund his subterranean amusement ride.
