In 1892, an entrepreneur built a pedal-powered monorail in New Jersey to carry workers between towns. You still had to do all the agonizing physical labor of pedaling a bike, but now you were trapped on a wooden fence line and had to pay a toll for the privilege. It was a hit until people realized actual bicycles could go anywhere without a proprietary track.
