Why movie glasses often have no lenses

Those deeply intellectual characters spouting exposition are completely unprotected from dust and wind. Real eyeglass lenses catch the harsh glare of massive studio lighting, creating blinding reflections that completely obscure the actor's eyes. Prop glasses are literally just empty frames, leaving the actor awkwardly poking their own eye if they forget.
