Why screenplay characters' names are in all caps

Screaming a character's name in all caps every time they enter a scene isn't about emphasis. It's a purely utilitarian trick designed so impatient producers and line-producers can rapidly flip through a thick stack of paper and count exactly how many scenes a specific actor is in without actually reading the story.
