Why a souvenir magnet can mark a refrigerator
A magnet may seem harmless because it sits still, but the risk comes when it moves. A metal-backed souvenir can rub against the refrigerator as someone shifts it, takes it off, or reaches past it. Dust or tiny grit caught between the two surfaces can act like sandpaper, while a rough metal edge can scrape directly across the finish.
The mark may be damage, not dirt
Many appliance exteriors have a thin painted, coated, or treated surface over the underlying metal. A scuff can disturb that outer layer, changing how it reflects light. That is why wiping or buffing may not make the mark disappear: the surface itself may be scratched rather than covered by removable residue. The exact result depends on the appliance finish and the magnet’s backing.
Lift it instead of sliding it
Before placing a souvenir, make sure both the refrigerator and magnet are clean. When repositioning it, pull it away from the surface and set it down elsewhere rather than dragging it. That small habit matters most with magnets that have hard, uneven metal backs—and can keep a travel memento from leaving a less welcome souvenir behind.
