From a South Park setting to its real-life owners
When Casa Bonita faced financial trouble, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone stepped in and bought the Colorado restaurant in 2021. Their connection to it was more than a passing joke: the place had already inspired the show’s 2003 episode “Casa Bonita,” in which Cartman schemes to get invited to a friend’s birthday outing there.
The restaurant is built around spectacle as much as food. Its indoor cliff divers, caves, waterfalls, and staged entertainment make a meal feel like a trip through a deliberately over-the-top attraction. That mix gave the creators a distinctive setting to satirize—and a real business they wanted to keep alive.
Keeping the spectacle, rebuilding the restaurant
Buying Casa Bonita did not mean simply taking over a working dining room. Parker and Stone undertook a major renovation before reopening it in 2023. The challenge was to preserve the features that made the place memorable while bringing the restaurant back into operation; the caves and performances are not incidental decorations but part of the experience guests come for.
The purchase turned a fictional obsession into a hands-on project. Instead of letting a singular local attraction disappear, its famous fictional admirers became responsible for maintaining the real cliffs, caves, and dining rooms that had made it a South Park landmark in the first place.
