For absolutely no logical reason, pure tin finishes on electronic components will sometimes spontaneously sprout microscopic, conductive metallic hairs. These 'tin whiskers' grow blindly through the air until they touch another circuit, instantly causing a catastrophic electrical short. It is essentially terminal metallic puberty that completely destroys multimillion-dollar equipment without warning.
