A closer look

Forget the pervasive myth that China owns all of America; the real landlord is Japan. Japanese investors and the Japanese government hold over a trillion dollars in US Treasury securities. Because Japan's own domestic interest rates have historically been practically zero (or negative), they aggressively buy up American debt to actually get a return on their cash. It is an incredibly codependent financial relationship that literally keeps the American government's lights on.
