A closer look

Disneyland Paris originally opened under the name Euro Disney and was such an unmitigated financial and cultural disaster that the executives genuinely feared the entire theme park would be forced into bankruptcy. The American corporate management completely failed to comprehend basic European cultural habits, initially banning alcohol in the park and entirely underestimating the French population's profound disdain for aggressive forced cheerfulness and plastic enthusiasm. European visitors firmly refused to buy the overpriced souvenirs or participate in the mandatory smiling, viewing the massive resort as a terrifying manifestation of American cultural imperialism plunked down in the middle of a French beet field. The corporation eventually had to rebrand the park, slash ticket prices, and furiously start serving wine with lunch just to appease the sophisticated locals who demanded a decent merlot with their Mickey Mouse shaped pretzels. It serves as a beautiful historical reminder that you cannot simply export aggressive American hospitality to a nation that culturally values brooding cynicism and a lengthy lunch break
