Modern medicine has some seriously blood-soaked skeletons in its closet. In the Tuskegee syphilis study, the US government explicitly lied to hundreds of Black men, telling them they were receiving free healthcare while secretly just observing their untreated syphilis destroy their bodies. Even when penicillin became the standard, cheap cure, researchers deliberately withheld it just to see exactly how the disease would ravage their internal organs.
