Why ancient Greek jumpers carried heavy weights

Applying terrible physics to sports was a hallmark of the ancient world. Ancient Greek athletes competing in the long jump carried heavy stone or lead weights called 'halteres.' The idea was that violently swinging these heavy rocks forward and thrusting them backward mid-air would somehow propel them further. In reality, it probably just destroyed their rotator cuffs, but they were deeply committed to the bit.
