A closer look

If you are too broke to afford a tropical Hawaiian vacation, just wait a few million years. The islands are sitting squarely on the Pacific tectonic plate, which is slowly but aggressively inching northwest toward the icy waters of Alaska at a rate of roughly three inches annually. It is a geographically slow march that will eventually strip Hawaii of its pristine tropical climate, assuming the human race does not destroy the planet first.
