It turns out that a rogue piece of carpet bunching up behind the gas pedal is a spectacularly bad thing. To prevent drivers from accidentally pinning the throttle to the floor, manufacturers installed small plastic retention hooks right into the carpeting. If you don't click the mat into the hook, you are actively inviting chaos into your footwell.
