Rear window defrosters are painted wire grids
Those copper-colored lines obstructing your rearview mirror aren't internal wires buried inside the glass. They are literally just a metallic resin painted directly onto the interior surface. When you hit the defrost button, electricity runs through this fragile paint, heating it up to melt the frost. Scrape the inside of your glass too hard, and you'll permanently ruin your morning visibility.
