A closer look
Before modern aviation safety pampered us with fire-retardant foam, belly landing a plane meant kissing your ass goodbye and hoping for sparks, not explosions. When a DC-4's nose gear jammed over Roswell in 1947, the pilot just scraped that aluminum belly across the runway raw. Miraculously, there was no massive fireball. Just a lot of screeching metal, shattered nerves, and a beautiful lesson in pure, unadulterated pilot grit.
