A closer look
That floppy fabric roof overhead isn't just a basic tent meant to keep the rain off your face. Early convertibles were incredibly loud, intensely cold, and completely miserable during bad weather. To fix this, modern soft tops are complex sandwiches of woven acrylic, acoustic deadening foam, and thick thermal lining, all tightly bound together. When fully latched, they surprisingly rival solid metal roofs in blocking out road noise, proving that aggressive engineering can indeed make cloth behave exactly like steel.
