Peak Cold War espionage basically involved extremely aggressive shopping. The CIA desperately needed immense amounts of titanium to build the uncatchable SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, but the US lacked the raw ore. Ironically, their biggest enemy, the Soviet Union, had tons of it. The CIA aggressively set up numerous fake shell companies around the world to secretly buy massive shipments of Soviet titanium just to build planes to heavily spy on the Soviets.
