When a king refused to do exactly what the church commanded, the Pope wouldn't just excommunicate him; he would hit the entire nation with an 'Interdict.' This basically meant that nobody in the entire country could legally get married or receive proper religious rites, turning the completely innocent peasant population against their own monarch.
