A closer look
Hubris has a brand name, and it’s 'Lazy Shave'. Richard Nixon famously refused professional TV makeup for the first televised presidential debate in 1960, opting instead to slather his face with a cheap drugstore beard-cover. Under the blazing studio lights, the product melted. While JFK looked like a bronzed Hollywood movie star, Nixon was sweating profusely, looking sickly and deeply untrustworthy. Radio listeners thought Nixon won, but the millions watching on TV overwhelmingly voted for the guy whose face wasn't melting.
