If you wanted your neighbor's prime farmland but lacked the funds to buy it, you simply accused her of cursing your cow. Once she was conveniently burned at the stake, the local authorities would seize her assets, and you could buy the land at a massive discount. Witchcraft was mostly just aggressive foreclosure.
