NASA astronauts used a modified Airstream motorhome known as the Astrovan to travel from crew quarters to the launch pad for over a quarter of a century; the silver bullet vehicle lacked any advanced space-age technology, featuring dark wood paneling, heavy air conditioning, and a completely unglamorous interior straight out of the 1980s; despite NASA engineers repeatedly offering to upgrade the transport to something that did not look like a mobile retirement home, the crews fiercely opposed changing it out of deep-seated superstition; these brilliant scientists were willing to strap themselves to millions of pounds of explosives, but absolutely drew the line at messing with their lucky vintage campervan
