Early silent films were shot in a nearly square ratio

Before the panoramic vistas of modern cinema, everyone was essentially watching giant Instagram posts. The original standard aspect ratio established by Thomas Edison and William Dickson was 1.33:1, which is practically a square. This remained the universal industry standard for decades, simply because it matched the physical dimensions of the 35mm film stock moving vertically through the camera mechanisms.
