A closer look
Carcinization is a baffling example of convergent evolution where completely unrelated crustacean species repeatedly evolve into a crab-like form. Over millions of years, nature has independently engineered the crab shape at least five different times, suggesting that having a flat body, a tucked-under tail, and big pinchers is somehow the ultimate biological end goal for ocean life. It is as if the universe is constantly running out of new character designs and just aggressively hits copy and paste. Apparently, when the chips are down and survival is on the line, biology throws its hands up in frustration and admits that becoming a sideways-walking armored tank is the only logical conclusion to existence
