When a severe, unrecoverable error occurs in a Unix-based system, the kernel triggers a routine officially named a 'Kernel Panic'. The machine determines that continuing to run would cause catastrophic data corruption, so it halts everything, screams an error code onto the screen, and dramatically dies. It is the digital equivalent of throwing your hands up and walking out of the room.
