Why refreshing your desktop does nothing

Furious clicking on your home screen is the digital equivalent of pacing nervously. Decades ago, refreshing the desktop was necessary to force a slow computer to redraw missing icons. Modern operating systems redraw the screen hundreds of times per second automatically. Spamming the refresh button does literally nothing but stroke your own impatience while the background processes quietly ignore you.
