Sometimes mysticism is just a solid legal loophole. In the 16th century, the Catholic Church was aggressively burning anyone dabbling in astrology or dark magic. However, looking into shiny objects (scrying) was weirdly categorized as 'natural magic' and thus not explicitly demonic. So, smart occultists swapped out their pentagrams for crystal balls just to keep doing magic without catching on fire.
