How the Almuten of the Figure Is Chosen

In traditional astrology, almuten figuris means the planet judged to have the greatest authority in the birth chart. The judgment is made by comparing planetary claims over important chart points, rather than simply asking which planet rules the Sun sign or Ascendant.

Those claims come from a system of essential dignities: a planet earns weight when a point falls in a sign or degree where that planet is considered especially strong—for example, its own sign, its exaltation, or a smaller division of the zodiac assigned to it. Traditional methods also consider selected chart points such as the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, and Part of Fortune. The planet with the strongest combined claim becomes the almuten.

What “Overrides” Means in a Reading

The almuten is treated as the chart’s leading organizing influence. An astrologer may use it to frame the person’s basic temperament and then interpret other placements in relation to that planet. If, for instance, a chart has several different sign rulers, the almuten offers one candidate for the planet that ties those competing indications together.

“Overrides” does not mean the other planets or chart placements disappear. It means the astrologer gives this planet interpretive priority—as a dominant voice, not the only voice. Its condition in the chart still matters: a planet considered powerful by the dignity calculation may express differently depending on its placement and relationships to other planets.

That makes the almuten less like a single sign label and more like a traditional astrologer’s verdict about which planet has the strongest overall title to the chart. The result depends on the scoring method and the points included, so different practitioners can reach different judgments.
