You can thank a highly desperate corporate marketing campaign from Scandinavia for your favorite overpriced sushi roll. In the 1980s, Norway had a massive surplus of salmon and realized the Japanese loved raw fish, but the Japanese deemed Pacific salmon too parasite-ridden to ever eat raw. A Norwegian delegation essentially bullied the Japanese market into trying Atlantic salmon, and a global culinary staple was violently born.
