Because geographical facts can't be copyrighted, companies like Google and Rand McNally protect their hard work by inventing fake 'paper towns' or 'trap streets.' If a rival map company suddenly starts publishing atlases featuring the made-up town of Agloe, New York, the original creators immediately know their data was stolen.
