Burning coal or natural gas to make electricity is spectacularly inefficient. Over half of the energy generated in a standard thermal plant vanishes straight into the atmosphere or nearby rivers as excess heat before it ever reaches a wire. We are effectively heating the outdoors at an industrial scale just to keep our reading lamps on.
