A closer look
Predicting the future wasn't about leisurely looking at the stars; it was about untangling messy knots to figure out which mountain spirit was currently holding a grudge. Before Buddhism dominated Tibet, the indigenous Bön religion relied heavily on reading the hidden elemental matrix (Jung-wa ngo-nga). One of their most complex systems was 'Ju-thig', a form of Mo divination utilizing a bunch of intricately knotted strings. By throwing these threads and analyzing how the knots fell in relation to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), the shaman could diagnose diseases, predict weather, and negotiate truces among invisible, violently territorial nature spirits.
