A fingernail as a tiny divination surface
Onychomancy is a form of divination that treats fingernails as a place to seek signs. In the practice described here, the nail was oiled and held so it reflected sunlight. The focus was not the nail’s health or shape, but what appeared in its bright, shifting surface.
Oil can make a surface glossier, while sunlight supplies the reflection. That gives the practitioner a small, changeable field to observe. The crucial step, however, was interpretation: a reflection did not announce a clear prediction on its own. The mystic read it as an omen.
Reading danger in an uncertain time
Some practitioners used that reading to predict whether a person would die in a plague. Such a prediction turned a frightening, hard-to-control danger into something that could be approached through a ritual and interpreted as a sign. It was a claim about fate, not a diagnosis of illness.
That distinction matters: onychomancy’s subject was the future as the practitioner understood it, not a bodily process revealed by the fingernail. In a time when plague made death feel close and unpredictable, even a glint on a nail could be given the weight of an answer.
