A closer look
Jawed Karim uploaded the very first video to YouTube on April 23, 2005, an incredibly mundane eighteen-second clip titled 'Me at the zoo' featuring him standing in front of some elephants and pointing out that they have very long trunks. Before the platform became a chaotic wasteland of aggressive algorithm-driven content, unskippable double advertisements, and deeply unhinged influencer apologies, it started with a low-resolution, completely unedited vlog of a nerdy guy stating an obvious biological fact about mammals. There were no flashy jump cuts, no desperate pleas to smash the subscribe button, and absolutely zero sponsored integrations for mobile raid games. This shaky piece of digital history serves as a tragic reminder of a much simpler internet era, back when uploading a video was just a novel way to share a boring personal moment rather than a calculated strategy to build a multi-million dollar personal brand
