Pharmaceutical grading requires higher purity than food

Not all chemicals are held to the same standard. Ingredients stamped with USP (United States Pharmacopeia) grading must pass vastly more stringent purity testing than compounds destined for the food supply. Even trace amounts of heavy metals or rogue particulate matter will result in an entire industrial batch being instantly condemned.
