When people get scared, they hoard all the physical metal they can find. During the American Civil War, coins vanished from circulation completely, forcing the creation of fractional currency. These were adorably tiny paper notes worth three, five, or ten cents. They earned the nickname 'shinplasters' because they were so flimsy they were practically useless.
