When you're writing a multi-volume masterpiece of memory and time, you apparently can't handle the sound of passing horse carriages. Proust was such an extreme hypochondriac and insomniac that he had the walls and ceiling of his Parisian bedroom lined with raw cork to block out all dust and noise so he could write in absolute, maddening silence.
