A closer look
Because the line between cinematic masterpiece and a bizarre botanical nightmare is incredibly thin. During the early development of ET, Spielberg played with the idea that the alien wasn't flesh and blood, but an advanced form of cosmic vegetable. Fortunately, they pivoted to the wrinkly, glowing-fingered pug-creature we know today, saving us all from a movie about a boy aggressively trying to phone home with a magical ficus.
