A closer look
Obsessive-compulsive map nerds absolutely lose their minds over Bourtange, a Dutch village shaped like a flawless, geometric star. Originally built in 1593 to control trade routes, the fort eventually degraded into a normal, boring farming village. But in the 1960s, local authorities realized history nerds would pay good money for perfect symmetry. They aggressively bulldozed modern buildings and restored the muddy moats just to prove that architectural paranoia makes for great drone photography.
