In an era of pristine, million-dollar studio gloss, the Strokes actively fought to make their debut album sound like absolute garbage. They fed vocals through tiny practice amps and intentionally compressed the drums to mimic a cheap demo tape. It was an incredibly expensive effort to sound like they had no money, and it successfully resurrected garage rock.
