A closer look

It only took one episode for a profoundly irritating neighbor with high-water pants to completely hijack an entire family sitcom. Family Matters was originally intended to be a grounded, working-class comedy focused entirely on the Winslow family dynamics. Then Steve Urkel stumbled into a single scene, the live studio audience lost their collective minds, and the writers immediately pivoted the entire premise of the show to revolve around a nasal-voiced teenager destroying property with pseudo-science.
