It’s hard to imagine the defining show about nothing without its most violently cynical participant. The original 1989 pilot featured a waitress named Claire as the female lead, but network executives demanded a stronger platonic female friend for the boys to bounce off. Elaine Benes was hastily written in afterward, and Louis-Dreyfus wasn't even aware the pilot existed until years later.
