A closer look

Unlike historic retail traditions based on actual foot traffic, Cyber Monday was literally conjured out of thin air by a trade association. In 2005, the National Retail Federation noticed that people were using their lightning-fast workplace internet connections on the Monday after Thanksgiving to buy the things they missed on Black Friday. They slapped a catchy, futuristic name on the trend, sent out a press release, and successfully engineered a multibillion-dollar artificial holiday.
