A soccer surname became part of Samus Aran’s name
Samus’s surname is a shortened adaptation of Arantes, the real surname of Brazilian soccer great Pelé. Rather than use the athlete’s name unchanged, the Metroid creators reshaped it into “Aran,” giving their fictional protagonist a distinct name while preserving a clear echo of its source.
A small reference with a lasting footprint
The connection is easy to miss because “Aran” reads naturally as a character surname, not an obvious celebrity reference. But it links the bounty hunter’s identity to one of soccer’s most recognizable figures: Pelé was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento. The borrowing lives in just a few letters, tucked into the name players have seen throughout the series.
That is the whole mechanism of the reference: a real surname is compressed and altered until it belongs to a fictional hero. The result keeps the inspiration recognizable without making Samus sound like a direct copy of Pelé’s name.
