A founder’s surname became a compact company name

“Namco” is a shortened form of Nakamura Amusement Machine Manufacturing Company. Its first letters—NA, M, C, and O—were compressed into a name that was far easier to fit on a sign, machine, or game title than the full corporate name.

The first part also carried a personal link: “Nakamura” referred to founder Masaya Nakamura. So the name did double duty, identifying the company’s amusement-machine business while retaining its founder’s surname in a shorter form.

From company label to familiar brand

A long legal name can explain what a business makes; a short brand name is easier to recognize and remember. Namco’s compact form could travel with the company as its products changed, without requiring the full manufacturing description every time. The result is a name whose familiar sound hides a straightforward origin: it is an abbreviation built from the company’s original name, not a separate invented word.
