Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing was founded in 1902 to mine corundum for grinding wheels. Except, they completely failed at geology and were actually mining anorthosite, a totally worthless mineral. On the verge of bankruptcy, they desperately pivoted to making sandpaper, eventually snowballing into the chemical giant that makes tape and sticky notes.
