Wikipedia began as a workaround for expert-only Nupedia
The ultimate source of all desperate college essays was almost totally unreadable. Jimmy Wales initially launched Nupedia in 2000, which required articles to go through a grueling seven-step peer-review process by legitimate PhDs. It was so agonizingly slow they only published 21 articles in the first year. In desperation, they created Wikipedia where literally anyone could edit, and chaos magically worked.
