The phrase usually refers to a void-of-course Moon: in some astrological traditions, a stretch of time after the Moon’s last major astrological alignment with another planet in its current zodiac sign and before it enters the next one. Astrologers treat that interval as a pause in which new plans may not develop as intended. It is a symbolic interpretation, not a scientifically established effect on events.
Why groceries might be included
Some people apply the idea to practical choices as well as major decisions. If shopping counts as beginning an activity, they may put it off until the period ends. Leaving the fridge empty is a visible, everyday consequence of following that rule—not evidence that the Moon changes what a grocery store sells or whether food will be available.
The choice also shows how a belief can shape routine without requiring a dramatic ritual: a person checks an astrological calendar, decides the timing feels unsuitable, and accepts the inconvenience of waiting. The next meal, rather than a grand life decision, becomes where the belief is felt.
