A closer look
Shadow work is a trendy buzzword today, but the 11th-century Tibetan yogini Machig Labdrön took it violently literally. She developed the 'Chöd' ritual, which directly translates to 'severance'. Instead of fighting her fears, she would intentionally sit in terrifying charnel grounds at midnight, blowing a trumpet made from a human thighbone. She then visualized a goddess decapitating her, chopping her physical body into a massive stew, and inviting hordes of angry demons to feast on her flesh, systematically obliterating her attachment to her own ego.
