The internet's primary garage sale started with literal garbage. In 1995, Pierre Omidyar listed a broken laser pointer on his new site for $1. It surprisingly bid up to $14.83. Astounded, Omidyar emailed the winning bidder to ensure they understood the item was defective. The buyer replied: 'I'm a collector of broken laser pointers.' And just like that, the endless void of weird internet commerce was born.
